It's not available yet expected release is early August (hopefully), and the 4GB model has been dropped in favor of just 8GB and 16GB at the start for $250 for the 8GB versionand (rumored) $325-350 for the 16GB model. Of course, that means I'll have to keep that beast of a machine on all day again.and I JUST started saving on electricity, too! :D :-) Also, you can play with the LiveCD, as that is usually a good litmus on how well your machine will run driver-wise. Good point.I'll probably get it the second it comes out, but I know someone on these forums are gonna attempt an Ubuntu install.I'll just read the forum to see if it works.

I'll probably use it for taking notes, surfing the net, a few other internet related things, and I may use TightVNC to remote desktop to my main PC from where ever I am.

Like I said, the Eee PC will be a portable extension of my desktop PC. I think the Eee PC will run regular Ubuntu or Kubuntu without much slow down.

One thing I do worry about is whether or not Ubuntu will have the required device drivers (although I imagine it will). but I will probably wipe it in favor of Ubuntu. I'll try out Xandros (I've never used it before). I see the Eee as a portable extension of my main computer. An extra 4 or 8 GBs isn't worth it for me to pay that much more. I'm going to stick with the basic 4GB model. Here's some questions I pose to the forumers.ġ) You think you're going to spend more to get the larger space? Can you justify another $100 for 8 gigs instead of 4? Also, would you even entertain the thought of the 16GB? God knows how they'll up the price for that.Ģ) Also, if you do wipe Xandros and put your own flavor on the machine, would you run Ubuntu/Kubuntu, or only use Xubuntu? I have a feeling that Ubuntu will run just fine (since Xandros is running KDE and larger programs like OpenOffice anyway), or would the speed boost be worth it to keep to Xubuntu? I was thinking about some thing when I actually do get the Eee PC, though. However.how can you complain? Hell, I'll get one of these for my mom for Christmas!

The only thing I'm a bit upset about is the utter lack of space, due to the fact that it's solid-state memory. I am quite amazed that such a laptop is coming out! I love the fact that it's so cheap and that it's Linux-based. Hope that makes it easier for everyone to find the specs.

Operating system: Xandros Linux (with an "Easy" and "Standard" mode which can be switched between when inexperienced users feel confident enough to move from the simple "Easy" layout to the "Standard" desktop environment.) The Eee PC is also Windows XP compatible and (as far as I know) compatible with most Linux distros. Expansion and media ports: 4 USB 2.0 slots, an audio and microphone port, flash card reader, and a VGA output Battery: a 4 cell battery that gives it just around 3 hours of battery life

Internet Connection: 56k, 10/100 Ethernet, and full 802.11g wireless capability Processor: 900MHz Intel Dothan based Pentium M CPU Price (of the 2nd Upgraded model with a 16GB flash HD): ? Price (of the 1st Upgraded model with a 8GB flash HD): $299 Price (of the Standard model with a 4GB flash HD): $199 but here's what I've been able to find out (including what's in the review): :/īut where can I find its technical specifications? The predicted release time is sometime between July and Christmas with most people saying it will be released sometime in August. The Eee PC is not selling yet, although it should be soon. :DĮDIT: PartisanEntity posted my exact comments just before I did.

how many files are you going to transfer to it anyway? Major storage is what external HDs are for. Besides, with the basic model of the Eee PC only having 4GB of flash memory. I use my usb thumb drive to transfer files when I have access to both the PC I'm getting a file from and the PC I'm transferring the file to. The Eee PC seems to be the perfect middle ground (at least for me).Īs far as the lack of a cd/dvd drive is concerned. For me, a normal laptop is too large, and/or too expensive, and/or comes with too many extras that I don't need a PDA is too small, and/or too expensive, and/or lacks some of the things I need in a portable computing device. I don't need a gaming computer to carry around with me, I just need something that I can do basic tasks with (browse the internet, IM, type notes, email). The Eee PC seems to be the perfect option for me. I personally need a keyboard that is at least close to full size. but those are just too small to get much done on. The ones that are small enough to be portable are generally the more expensive ones. I've never really owned a laptop because I never really considered them to be all that portable.
